Moccasin Fit & Cultural Guide

Welcome to the Moccasin Fit & Cultural Guide

Every pair of moccasins from The Silver Moccasin is handcrafted by Indigenous and Métis artisans. This guide will help you find the right fit, care for your moccasins, and wear them with the respect and understanding their heritage deserves. Reach out anytime if you have questions.

1. Measuring Your Foot

Because our moccasins are handmade, sizing does not follow mass-production charts. Measure your foot rather than relying on your standard shoe size.

  1. Place a blank sheet of paper on a hard floor. Stand on it with full weight distributed evenly.
  2. Trace around your foot with a pencil held vertically (not angled).
  3. Measure the longest point (heel to longest toe) and the widest point (ball of foot).
  4. Add 0.5–1 cm to each measurement for natural movement and break-in comfort.
  5. Compare your measurements to the size chart on the individual product listing.

Tip: Measure both feet and use the larger measurement — feet naturally differ slightly in size.

Time of day: Feet swell throughout the day. Measure in the afternoon or evening for the most accurate fit.

2. Sizing Across Handmade Items

Handcrafted items will have natural variation between pairs — this is a hallmark of authentic artisan work, not a defect.

  • A size on one style may fit slightly differently than the same size on another style, especially across different makers.
  • Brain-tanned or smoked hide softens and conforms to your foot with wear; commercial leather holds its shape more rigidly.
  • When a listing notes "fits true to size" or "size up," follow that guidance — it reflects the maker's direct knowledge of that pair.
  • Between sizes? Size up for wider feet, size down for narrower feet.

3. Indoor vs. Soled Moccasins

Soft-Sole (Indoor) Moccasins

  • Designed for indoor wear on smooth or carpeted surfaces.
  • Thin leather sole provides a barefoot-like feel and exceptional comfort.
  • Not suitable for outdoor use — moisture and rough surfaces damage the sole quickly.
  • Ideal as: slippers, ceremonial wear, regalia, or cultural dress.

Hard-Sole (Outdoor) Moccasins

  • Rubber or thick leather sole for outdoor durability.
  • Suitable for pavement, trails, and outdoor terrain.
  • Still avoid prolonged wet conditions to protect the upper.

Check the "Sole Type" detail on each product listing to confirm which category applies.

4. Breaking In Your Moccasins

New moccasins — especially brain-tanned or natural hide — will feel snug at first. The hide is designed to mold to your foot over several wears.

  • Wear for short periods (30–60 minutes) at first, gradually increasing wear time.
  • Some warmth is normal as the leather softens.
  • Do not soak in water to force a break-in — this permanently damages the hide finish.
  • Smoked hide softens more quickly than vegetable-tanned or commercial leather.

5. Care & Maintenance

General Care

  • Brush off dirt with a soft dry brush after each wear.
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
  • Stuff with tissue or a shoe tree when not in use to maintain shape.

Leather & Hide Care

  • Condition leather moccasins with a natural beeswax-based leather conditioner.
  • Avoid silicone sprays — they clog leather pores over time.
  • For smoked or brain-tanned hide: a light mink oil application once or twice a year is sufficient.

Beadwork & Embellishments

  • Handle beaded areas gently. Avoid snagging on rough surfaces.
  • Do not submerge beaded moccasins — thread and sinew can weaken.
  • If a bead comes loose, save it. Contact us to discuss repair options.

If Your Moccasins Get Wet

  • Stuff loosely with newspaper and air dry at room temperature.
  • Never use a dryer, radiator, or direct heat — this causes cracking and shrinkage.

6. Maker Provenance & Artisan Sourcing

The Silver Moccasin sources directly from Indigenous and Métis makers across Canada.

  • Every pair is handcrafted — small variations in appearance are part of what makes each one unique.
  • We do not carry mass-produced replicas.
  • Some makers request limited public information; we honour those boundaries. Reach out with specific questions.

7. Wearing Moccasins Respectfully

Moccasins are a living tradition carried by Indigenous peoples across Turtle Island for thousands of years. Wearing them is a privilege that comes with responsibility.

Respectful wearing looks like:

  • Everyday wear and home use — welcomed and encouraged. This is how moccasins have always been used.
  • Learning about the nation and maker behind your pair to deepen your connection to what you're wearing.
  • Not wearing regalia-style moccasins with nation-specific ceremonial designs in casual or costume contexts without understanding their significance. When in doubt, ask us or your elders.
  • Crediting the maker and culture when sharing photos or gifting a pair.

Cultural context:

  • Different nations have distinct moccasin traditions — construction methods, beading styles, and design motifs carry specific cultural meanings.
  • Métis floral beadwork traditions differ from Plains, Woodland, or Eastern styles. Each has its own story.
  • Buying from authentic Indigenous-owned or businesses who directly support Indigenous Maker — rather than mass-produced imitations — is the most impactful way to support these traditions.

We welcome questions. Honouring this tradition is a shared responsibility, and we are here to help.
